phancy.com rating:

phancy.com notes: A pleasant surprise! I thought this would be darker and derivative, but it turned out to be unpredictably funny and clever. The lead is impressive in the dual role of anti-hero and visual manifestation of his own internal dialogue. The movie 100% rides on his performance, and he nails it. The tension is propelled by flashbacks and twists that never seem forced, and a lot of normal horror tropes get subverted. I also think it's amusing that this is an Australian film pretending to be an American film pretending to be shot in Finland.

3.5 out of 5 stars - Bloody Hell Is a Pretty Fun and Very Weird Horror Flick

"Predictable" is one of the most damning words in film criticism. As a reviewer of films - and as a filmgoer in general - there's nothing worse than when a movie goes exactly where you think it will without any nuance or fun along the way. Enjoying the ride is one thing; guessing correct so many times you should get a screenwriter's credit is another. So that's why movies like director Alister Grierson's Bloody Hell are so welcome. At no point in the entire 95-minute runtime was I exactly sure what was going on. For better or worse, it absolutely keeps you guessing.

Bloody Hell' Heads to Finland for One Hell of a Bloody Good Time

They say there are only seven basic stories in all of literature and film, and while the tally may be arguable the core truth remains. That means the key to making your story stand out rests in the details and what you choose to do with that otherwise familiar plot. Many films struggle on that front, but some instead take the opportunity to cut loose and deliver something truly memorable. Bloody Hell belongs in the latter camp as it presents the wildly violent and extremely funny adventure of a boy, a girl, and the cannibalistic Finnish family standing between them.
